I grew up in Ireland in a house filled with books. My Father had been
a school master and he instilled in me a love of reading and of language.
My Mother died when I was just ten years old and my Dad raised me. We
were all heartbroken by our loss and the emptiness that it created in
our home. Books helped to fill the void. The escape they provided into
other worlds and other lives brought some relief. If a character in
a book had experienced some great loss I was able to identify with them
and I found great comfort in making that connection. Now I live in the
USA in a house filled with books. I play an angel on television but
in 'real' life I am a Mother, a 'Single Mother'. I looked for a book
to read to my five year old daughter that reflected our situation, so
that she that she would be reminded that we are a family too. I could'nt
find one so I decided to write one!.
I wanted "Love is a Family" to represent all types of families
and to tell our children that a family is not only defined by Mother,
Father, Brother or Sister but that a family is defined by LOVE.
